Grandson of the creator of the “Mozambique Rhythm”, Pello El Afrokan Jr continues the saga.
His grandfather Pedro Izquierdo was born in 1933. He had a difficult start to his career, as he worked on the docks. He performed in any party and in 1959 he formed his own group and they took part in solemn shows in the Cabaret Tropicana. From that moment, his life had a huge turnaround and his “rhythm” became well known. He performed in important dance halls, was on TV shows and his percussion knowledge was even passed on to the Escuela Nacional de Arte (National Art School).
This CD is a true reflection of a rhythm that was passed down two generations. Omar Merencio Izquierdo maintains the Mozambique rhythm, conserving the base given to him by his grandfather, but adapting it to current times.
A lot of tunes on this album were composed by Pedro Izquierdo such as “Arañakiña”, “La Pillé”, and “Mozambique #1”.
